GUIDELINES FOR PHONETIC PRONUNCIATION IN THE KEY:
- The syllable with the heaviest stress is CAPITALIZED. Example: Jehovah = jih-HOH-vuh
- The syllable with the second heaviest stress is followed by an accent [ ' ] mark. Example: Areopagus = air'ee-OP-uh-guhs
- Optionally pronounced letters, syllables, or secondary accents are enclosed within ( parentheses ). Example: specie = SPEE-s(h)ee = either SPEE-shee or SPEE-see
GUIDELINES FOR PRONUNCIATION IN THE NW TRANSLATION:
- The accent mark follows the syllable on which major emphasis should be put in pronouncing the word.
- If the accented syllable ends in a vowel, the vowel is long in its pronunciation.
- If a syllable ends in a consonant, the vowel in that syllable is short in its pronunciation.
- When the two vowels a and ie are combined, as in Mor'de·cai and Si'nai, the ai is pronounced as a long i.
- The ch combination in names is pronounced hard, like k, except in Rachel, where ch is soft. Example: Chaldean = kal-DEE-uhn.
