Hurricane Ivan arrived in our area (Pensacola, Florida) during Wednesday night and Thursday morning on September 15/16, 2004. Florida Town is a small community located at the northeast end of Escambia Bay near Pace, Florida, northeast of Pensacola. We have friends who had a beautiful home on the Bay in Florida Town. It was one of a number of homes that was totally destroyed.

The storm surge from Hurricane Ivan was measured by the Army Corp of Engineers at 13 feet near the Interstate 10 bridge over Escambia Bay, with additional 4-6 foot storm-driven waves. This storm surge plus the heavy winds washed out part of the Interstate 10 bridge, and did terrific damage to most of the homes near the water in Florida Town, which is located north of the I-10 bridge. The following pictures show some of this damage.

All pictures on this page were taken on 21 October 2004, five weeks after Hurricane Ivan, by Darren Butler. Pictures used with his permission.
